Berry Clean: Introducing the Indian Soapberry

What is a Soapberry?

The Indian soapberry, which is derived from the reetha or Sapindus Mukorossi tree, is a remarkable natural alternative to traditional laundry detergents. Native to the Himalayan region, the soapberry (also aptly dubbed the “washnut”) has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine and household cleaning due to its natural surfactant properties.

The soapberry contains naturally occurring compounds called saponins, which act as cleansing agents and create a soap-like lather when mixed in water. Historically, communities in south and east Asia have utilized soapberries for various purposes, from washing clothes to cleaning dishes and even as a gentle shampoo for hair. Soapberries are also used to treat a host of medical conditions. including psoriasis and eczema, due to their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Today, the popularity of the soapberry is only growing as people seek sustainable (and affordable!) alternatives to chemical-laden detergents.

But you may be asking yourself: why would I wash my clothes with berries over my tried-and-true detergent?

Going Nuts for Washnuts

Well, for one, soapberries, unlike many chemical-laden detergents, offer exceptional cleaning power while being gentle on clothes and skin. Thanks to their natural soapy properties, soapberries effectively remove dirt, stains, and odors from fabrics without the need for harsh chemicals. This makes them ideal for sensitive skin and delicate fabrics, leaving your clothes feeling soft and fresh. Soapberries also leave behind no chemical scent, resulting in laundry that smells clean and natural. The cherry on top is that soapberries are hypoallergenic and free from additives, making them a safe choice for those with allergies and skin sensitivities.

Not only are soapberries good for our clothes, but they’re also great for the planet. Whereas traditional chemical detergents often contain harsh ingredients like phosphates and sulfates that can harm aquatic life and contribute to water pollution, soapberries offer a more sustainable solution to your laundry needs. Soapberries are entirely biodegradable, meaning that they break down naturally without leaving behind any harmful residues. Their cultivation also requires minimal water and no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, reducing their environmental impact. The reetha tree also boasts an impressive yield of around 30 to 35 kgs of soapberries per tree!

Soapberry Sorcery

To use soapberries as a detergent, start by placing 4-5 soapberry shells in a cotton or mesh bag and tie it securely. Then, simply toss the bag into your washing machine along with your laundry. For a standard load, one bag of soapberries typically suffices, but you may need to adjust the quantity based on the load size and desired level of cleaning. The berries will release their natural saponins during the wash cycle, cleansing your clothes without the need for synthetic chemicals. For heavily soiled items or larger loads, you can soak the bag of soapberries in warm water for a few minutes before adding it to the machine. Once the wash cycle is complete, remove the bag of soapberries and allow them to air dry. These soapberries can usually be reused for several washes before needing to be replaced, making them both economical and sustainable!
